Obituary for Eilene Rose Mello

Eilene Rose Dutra Mello

Eilene Rose Dutra Mello passed away on February 9, 2018, at the age of 81 years.
Mrs. Mello was born in New Bedford, MA and was raised in Fairhaven, MA. She is a graduate of Fairhaven High School and graduated with a generalist high school diploma with a concentration in business correspondence.
In 1958, Mrs. Mello (nee Dutra) married Richard Mello in New Bedford, MA and had one child, Lori Mello. By 1965 they were on the move from Massachusetts to California, fearlessly driving across country in their Chevrolet Impala. They settled in Santa Maria, CA and also lived in Turlock, CA, Los Angeles, CA and finally settled in Chula Vista, CA, a suburb of San Diego, CA. There, Mrs. Mello owned and operated in the family home, a board and care facility for the aged.
Taking care of the elderly was Eilene Mello’s passion. She moved with her husband to Ferndale, Michigan in 1990 and joined the organization Care Givers, where she worked as a Home Health Aide for almost 10 years. This was her life’s work and her calling. Mrs. Mello would often sit by the bed of her clients until they took their last breath. She often remarked “This is what I’m here for. This is the gift God gave me.”
She was preceded in death by her dear husband Richard Mello in 2010, her sister Marlene Soto in 2012, and her parents. She is survived by her daughter Lori Mello of Ferndale, Lori’s significant other John Warren (whom she felt was a son to her) of Windsor, Ontario Canada, her niece Marlene Souza Cameron of Ozark, Arkansas, and countless nieces, nephews, God children, friends, neighbors and caregivers.
A Celebration of Eilene’s life will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at Wessels and Wilk Funeral Home at 23690 Woodward Ave. in Ferndale, MI. Her funeral will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help (formerly St. James Catholic Church) on Friday, February 16, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. with Father Paul Chateau officiating.
Being a profound lover of animals, it is fitting that memorial donations in memory of Eilene Mello can be made to the Michigan Humane Society.
