Mr. Wessels, the founder of Wessels & Wilk Funeral Home, originally worked for the Steinbal Funeral Home in Ferndale. He worked at Steinbal Funeral Home until Mr. Steinbal retired. Mr. Wessels decided to build a new funeral home, which is the current location. The funeral home was built in the early 1940's, and was constructed as a funeral home, which was rare for the time.

The Double "W" itself represents the merging of the past with the present. The past, Mr. Wessels, and the present, Mr. John Wilk who joined the firm almost 30 years ago.
