Evaline (Evy) Whaley, Smith, Yates, Calhoun passed away peacefully on August 30, 2023. She was born July 7, 1922, on her family's farm near Spirit Lake, Iowa and lived there with her parents Dora and Thomas along with five siblings Howard, Gerald, Orpal, Genevieve, and Joanne. After getting married she moved to Detroit.
She survived three husbands Ezra Jack Smith, Curtis Yates and Earl Calhoun who were all veterans of the Second World War. She has three children; John Thomas Smith (Valerie), Connie Kay Zolynsky (Larry) and Sally Ann Kratz (Ron); five grandchildren Christopher Smith (Kristen), Robyn Smith (Sadie Baker), Matt Zolynsky (Zonia), Ben Zolynsky (Teresa), James Zolynsky (Annie), Brian Thomas (Sarah Martin) and Katie Thomas (Mark Maslyn) and six great-grandchildren; Peyton Smith, Parker Smith, Tyler Zolynsky, Will Zolynsky, Zophia Zolynsky and Graham Maslyn.
Evy also has two step-sons; Jerry Calhoun (Chris) and Jeff Calhoun (Mary); with two step-grandchildren; Greg Calhoun (Amber) and Scott Calhoun (Paula); and seven step great-grandchildren Carter Calhoun, Cameron Calhoun, Michael Calhoun (Jaya), Christie Frederickson (Justin), Hayes Calhoun (Juni), Megan Pierce (Matt), Sarah Calhoun (Reggie Greenwood) and one great step-grandaughter Quinn.
Evy studied music and graduated from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. She taught music in the Detroit public schools. She also gave piano lessons, sang in choirs and was active in church. Evy enjoyed entertaining and planning many family celebrations. She was active in both the Boy and Girl Scouts with her children.
She lived sixteen years in Ohio with her last husband, Earl Calhoun, and was a winter resident for twenty-seven years in Mesa, Arizona. She was a Michigan resident for over fifty years.
There was no funeral or memorial service per her request. Memorials can be made to Accent Hospice. Interment at Acacia Park Cemetery in Beverly Hills, MI, next to her first husband and father of her children.
Evy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt. She continues to be an inspiration to her family and friends. Her devoted nieve, Rhonda Burns, visited her almost daily bringing Evy the same love that she always shared with others.
