Helen Carroll (nee: Barsky)
Commerce Township, Michigan
Helen passed away peacefully at her family’s home on Sunday evening, Feb. 6, 2022. She was born on March 14, 1927, in Detroit, MI, to Joseph and Lucy Barsky. In 1943, Helen took a job making airplane parts and proudly finished her high school GED. Always the artist, she painted in acrylics, oils, and hodgepodge on any suitable items including kerosene lamps, school desks, and whisky still trays. She grew her own flowers and sold them in the storefront window of her family-owned, gutter and paint store. She also sang in her church choir. Always an industrious lady, she directed crafts in nursing homes, worked at Beaumont Hospital as a phlebotomist and EKG technician, she delivered newspapers, and organized pinecone wreath workshops in her basement. In her later years, she attended many iconography workshops and was known among the Russian Orthodox Churches an accomplished iconographer.
Helen leaves behind her daughters Sharlene (& Thomas) Borke and Dawn (& Mike) Ostach; grandchildren: Debbi (& Jeff) Gischia, Tommy, Jonathan (& Polina), Stephen (& Carol), and Matthew Borke, Michael Ostach, and Christy (& Kyle) Huver; great-grandchildren: Jacob, Ribekah, Daniel, Rachel, and Gabriel Gischia; Cody, Colton, Ellie, Emilie, and Zachary Borke; Taylor Kirsch, Scarlett Jade Costa, and Theodore Huver; and great-great-grandchild: Lucas Gischia. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bruce Carroll; and her brother, Cyril Barsky.
