Helena (Helen) Makarski of Royal Oak, Michigan, died peacefully on January 7th. Helen was born on August 6, 1924.
Beloved wife of the late Wojciech (Albert) Makarski, cherished mother of two, grandmother of five, and great grandmother of eight, Helen leaves behind her a legacy of love and laughter, and of deeply devoted service to her family. Helen loved nature, laughter, good company, good food, and a good cup of tea. Nothing made her happier than knowing that her children and grandchildren were happy and safe.
Helen served in the Women’s Auxiliary of the British Royal Air Force (WAAF), during World War II, and met her future husband at an RAF dance in Hucknall, England. They married in 1947 and emigrated from Derbyshire, England, to Detroit in 1955.
Her family is deeply grateful to the Ivy Cottage and hospice earth angels who provided Helena with care in her final years and who she considered part of her extended family.
Helena is survived by her two daughters, five grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, January 11, at 10:00 am with an in-state period at 9:30 am at National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica, 2100 Twelve Mile Rd, Royal Oak. Interment will be at Roseland Park Cemetery, Berkley.
