Melvin Lee Obituary

Melvin Lee, affectionately known as "Mel," passed away on February 23, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born on January 7, 1941, Mel was a graduate of Cooley High School and, after entering the workforce, began his career with hard work and dedication. He joined Smith Hinchman & Grylls as a draftsman and, through on-the-job training and perseverance, evolved into a successful mechanical engineer. Mel completed his professional journey at Giffels & Associates, where he served as a Mechanical Group Leader, a testament to his detail-oriented nature and analytical skills.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mel was immensely proud of his family, cherishing the success of his two children, Mattew Lee and Michelle (Ryan) Hruska, both of whom pursued their education and have established rewarding careers. As a father, he offered unwavering support and was a caring provider who took great pride in the achievements of his family. Mel’s joy extended further with the arrival of his granddaughters, Gracie and Lauren, with whom he shared many treasured moments.

Outside of his career, Melvin had a profound love for cars, particularly his cherished 1987 Foxbody Mustang, which holds a special place in his family's heart. He derived joy from tinkering with and washing his vehicles, always opting for classic black cars. In his retirement years, Mel often enjoyed sitting on the porch of his home in Huntington Woods, engaging in conversations with neighbors and anyone who passed by. His kind demeanor and honesty made him well-liked within his community.

Mel also had a deep appreciation for animals, fostering many pet birds and cats throughout his life. He found comfort in observing and feeding animals outside, which brought him peace and happiness.

Melvin is survived by his devoted wife, Joan Lee, and his loving children, Mattew Lee and Michelle (Ryan) Hruska. He leaves behind cherished memories with his granddaughters, Gracie and Lauren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Florence Lee, father, Roland Lee, sister, Barbara (Fred) Hyatt, brother, Ron (Ginny) Lee, mother-in-law, Dolores Schlaff, father-in-law, Edward Schlaff, brothers-in-law, Robert Schlaff and David Schlaff, and his niece Janine Hyatt.
