Richard was born in Detroit at Providence hospital on February 20, 1945 to parents Clifford and Eunice Gowman. He was an only child. He grew up in Royal Oak and graduated from Dondero High School in 1963. He went on to colleges Highland Park Junior college, Oakland University and graduated from Wayne State University in December of 1969 with a bachelor of arts degree. Richard taught High School English at Troy and Troy Athens High School from 1970 to 1975. Then in 1976 he decided to change careers to become a chiropractor. After marrying Kay Dawson in August of 1976 they moved to Portland, Oregon where he attended Western States Chiropractic college. After 2 years Richard decided to transfer to Sherman Straight Chiropractic college in Spartanburg, South Carolina where he received his Chiropractic degree in 1980. He and his wife returned to their home state of Michigan and started a family in Richards home town of Royal Oak, which is where he remained until his passing. Richard is best known for being an incredibly kind, loving, and supportive friend and father. He always helped anyone who needed it and would do anything to support a friend. Richard devoted much of his career to listening, helping, and healing others. He was an incredibly selfless person. Over the course of his life he touched too many hearts to count. Richard's passions were cars, history, family, and learning all about everyday people. Even at restaurants, Richard always took the time to get to know the servers name, where they grew up and where they went to school. He made everyone feel important and heard. People really mattered to Richard. Memories were Richards greatest treasure in life. He loved to talk about past family experiences, life growing up in Royal Oak, and how places have changed over time. He lived a simple life of appreciation of his friends and family and helping those he cared about. Richard's favorite family memories were his many visits to Cedar Point, Mackinac Island, Torch Lake, and many car shows over the years. He cherished all vacations with his family. Richard was a kind compassionate and caring man and father. He touched hearts in so many ways over the years and we will be missed by all those who knew him. Although this is a very sad time for his family, their hearts are full with so many wonderful memories with this amazing man and father. Dad we know your light and wisdom will shine down on us always. We love you so much. You're our hero! Love your children,Davey, Andy, Melisa, Joanna and grand children, Julianna, and Lillianna.
