Susan Ann Bautel Obituary

Susan Ann Bautel, a radiant beacon of love and nurturing, passed away on January 16, 2026, just a day shy of her 87th birthday. Born on January 17, 1939, Susan was a lifelong learner, having earned both her undergraduate and master's degrees in guidance counseling from the University of Detroit. Her career was diverse; she spent many fulfilling years at the University of Detroit's Registrar's office, contributed as a homemaker, and shared her knowledge as a religious education teacher.

Susan was the epitome of a "mama bear," fiercely protective and unwavering in her love for family. She held an incredibly resilient and determined spirit, always guided by her strong faith and love for Jesus. Through her vibrant personality, she became a people person who exuded warmth and affection, offering generous hugs that could light up even the darkest of days. She thrived on helping others, drawing joy from her relationships and the smiles she could bring to those around her.

Susan's accomplishments shone brightest in her role as a mother and grandmother. She was incredibly proud of her children—Julie (Evan) Biafore, Jon-Paul Bautel, and Nicole (Alan) Dostie—and her adoration for her grandchildren—Sawyer, Sinclaire, and Scarlett Dostie—knew no bounds. She proudly cheered for them in all their endeavors, relishing every moment spent in their company, and often shared their triumphs with anyone willing to listen.

Her love extended beyond her immediate family to her cousins, whom she cherished as siblings. Their bond was one of enduring camaraderie and affection, filling her heart with joy. Susan remained deeply active in her parishes of St. James and St. Mary, where her contributions in teaching religious education and serving on the school board left an indelible mark.

Beyond her familial ties, Susan had a myriad of interests. She found great pleasure in gardening, particularly with orchids and roses, and enjoyed being outdoors, especially by the water. A passionate college sports fan, she delighted in cheering for her favorite teams and treasured the excitement of attending games. Additionally, her artistic inclinations came to life through playing the piano, drawing, sewing, and needlepointing. Every Broadway show she watched invigorated her spirit and ignited her love for the arts. Susan Mirrored the infamous symbol of kindness, giving and compassion in the story of the giving tree by Shel Silverstein. Her commitment extended beyond her job roles, as she volunteered diligently at her church and her children’s schools, embodying the essence of community spirit. She also had a great fondness for Johnny Mathis, Carole King and Peanuts Cartoons.

Susan is survived by her devoted husband, Kenneth Bautel, and her beloved children and grandchildren. She joins her dear parents, Stephen and Helen Micko, in eternal rest.

As we mourn her passing, we celebrate a life extraordinarily lived—a life that inspired, uplifted, and brought joy to many. Susan will be profoundly missed but forever remembered for her fierce love, unwavering kindness, and remarkable spirit that made a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
