Virginia M. Hanawalt age 86 of Pleasant Ridge passed away Thursday the 14th. Virginia Marie Konz attended Immaculata High School in Detroit and went to Marygrove College where she received a teaching degree and then taught kindergarten in the Detroit Public Schools. She married Thomas Edward Hanawalt at St. Bridges Catholic Church in 1963 and settled in Pleasant Ridge (PR) in 1964. She gave birth to a son, John, and two daughters Anne and Mary. She returned to teaching preschool in the 1970s and 80s and ran the nursery school at the PR Community Center. She loved working with children in early childhood development. She also served as the secretary of the PR Pool during this time. Virginia worked as a substitute teacher at Royal Oak St. Mary’s Grade School and managed the school bus program. She was active in St. Mary’s Church and was an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion. She loved her community and neighborhood and organized an annual block party on Norwich street in PR. She was in the PR Garden Club and Ladies Red Hats Club for many years. She was accomplished at playing the piano and enjoyed interior decorating, collecting antiques, making pottery, arts & crafts, sewing, cooking, and flower gardening. Most of all, she loved spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchild, and a Boston terrier named Winnie.
She was the beloved wife of Thomas, Beloved mother of John William (Julia) Hanawalt, Ann Elizabeth (Tom) Kowalec, Mary Helen (Terry) Lamar, Sister of Joseph (Gail) Konz, Louise (Richard) Muszynski , Grandmother to Emily Woolf, Sam Woolf, Thomas Hanawalt, Clare kowalec, Michelle Kowalec.
and great grandmother to Jonathan Hanawalt. Visitation Thursday from 4-8 pm. Instate Friday 9:30 am until the time of her funeral Mass 10 am. at St. Mary Catholic Church 730 South Lafayette Royal Oak, Michigan 48067. Burial Oakview Cemetery.
